South Africa (Cape Town)- Day 8- Town & Garden

We spent the morning exploring the sights of downtown Cape Town. Unlike most European cities which have many historic sites and are fairly walkable, Joburg and Cape Town have more of a South American feel in some ways—fewer major sites and walking is not always a great option.  We started in the Company’s Gardens, passing Parliament, statues, the national gallery, etc. At the other end of the park, we stopped by the historic Belmond Mount Nelson Hotel.  Two book stops later—the Center for the Book (a library branch) and Clarke’s Bookshop--we headed over to Greenmarket Square and the Adderley Street Flower Market. City Hall, the District 6 Museum, and the Castle of Good Hope closed out our busy morning downtown.

One of the reservations we were most excited about heading into this trip was our lunch at Test Kitchen—and today was the day.  It absolutely lived up to expectations—it was a really fantastic meal with lots of fresh flavors and great wine. A really relaxing midday treat after a morning running around the city center in the heat (highs were in the mid-90s today!).

Full and happy, we decided to head up to the Kirstenbosch Botanic Gardens this evening, one of the UNESCO heritage sites in South Africa. In the shadow of Table Mountain, we took a lovely stroll in the beautiful gardens and enjoyed the break from the heat as the sun started setting.
