South America- Day 26- Santiago/Rio

Onto our last country! Well be in Rio for a few days then São Paulo briefly-- then home! Hard to believe we have less than a week to go, but it does feel like we've been gone for a while and we have exciting things at home as well to look forward to. True travel day-- up to redistribute and repack for the last time, to the airport and then flew to brazil. It is actually our last flight on LAN (we'll be on TAM to SP then United home), and I will miss their snacks-- particularly the alfajor cookies!

Got into Rio without incident and were picked up by the hotel's driver, Marco. Didn't hit any traffic shockingly and made it to Casa Cool Beans in the Santa Teresa neighborhood quickly. Lance, one of the owners was here to check us in and show us around. He and David actually have a place in DC as well, so it was funny common ground! I think he'll be a great resource as hr wants to help us figure out the best way to do all the best of rio while being safe and avoiding the wake left by the pope's visit (he leaves tomorrow fortunately). Casa cool beans has a ton of character an. Is located in a more upscale and historic neighborhood; definitely think we made the right call not staying on one of the beaches.

Grabbed dinner in this area at a place called Portellas where we had a Brazilian version of shepherds pie and a dish similar to the fat rice we loved in chicago. And of course I had to kick off the Brazilian part of a trip with a caiprinha!
